The Essential Guide to Sun Protection

The Essential Guide to Sun Protection

In Minnesota, we don’t like letting sunny weather go to waste. When our cold winters melt away, we are all outside – on the boat, in the garden, and dining al fresco. Spending time in the sun is such a lovely experience because sunshine is a natural mood booster, of course there’s a downside. The UVA and UVB rays of the sun can cause serious damage to our skin, causing premature aging, discoloration and even cancer. Cases of melanoma rose sharply with the tanning trends that lasted from the 1930s through the early 21st century.

Today, we’re smarter about the sun, that doesn’t mean we can’t bask on a lounger with our favorite friends and a round of perfect margaritas. We have a number of sunless tanners, spray tan services from some of our favorite people at LuxGlo Mobile Spray Tans, SPF lip balms, sunscreens and services that can prevent and treat sun damage.

When it comes to sunshine, we want you to have your cake and eat it, too. Here are our skin care tips for sun protection.

Stick to a Morning Sunscreen Routine

No matter the season, sun protection should be built into your morning skin care routine. Adding a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to your morning routine will help block out the harmful rays of the sun. Whether you use Chemical or Mineral (physical) Sunscreen is up to you. In general, mineral sunscreens are tolerated better by acne prone or sensitive skin. The biggest difference between the two is how they protect against the sun. Mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin physically blocked the UVA and UVB rays from our skin, while Chemical sunscreen absorbs the UV rays and turns them into heat, dissipating them from the skin. Mineral Sunscreens spread thicker and whiter on the skin, while chemical sunscreens blend and spread easier. Whichever you choose, the key factors with sunscreen are start your day off with one, don’t forget your neck and décolletage, reapply at least every 2 hours, more if you have been in water, don’t forget, your scalp and scars need sunscreen too, and yes you need sunscreen even when it’s cloudy!

Incorporating sun safety into your morning skin care routine will prolong the youthful look and health of your skin, but make sure to be mindful about your products. Always choose a broad spectrum sunscreen from a reputable brand with dermatologist recommendations, as lab studies have shown that many common sunscreens lack the protection they claim

Stay Sun-Safe on the Go

Whether you’re heading to the pool or brunch with the gals or the guys, always bring sun protection essentials along. The nice thing about these essentials is that they can also make fabulous fashion statements. Your lips and eyes are especially vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays. Before you go, apply a lip balm with an SPF of 50 or more. SPF lip balms with colorful tints can take the place of lipstick while moisturizing and protecting your pout. Accessorize with sunglasses that have a UV400 rating or “100% UV protection” on their label, as well as a wide-brimmed hat. Your sun-safe look is sure to make a splash.

If you’re getting in the water, remember to apply your waterproof sunscreen at least 15 minutes before jumping in, and always reapply every two hours.

Treat and Prevent Damage with a Pro

If you’ve already developed sun damage, don’t feel down on yourself. You can’t help that you didn’t know the risk years earlier, and besides, there are treatments available at your local medspa. Chemical peels have been proven to improve sun-damaged skin by triggering and reviving the skin’s natural healing methods. Many professional spa facials include ingredients that provide extra protection against the sun’s effects as well, letting you glow brighter with minimal damage from the bright rays of the sun. If you are feeling that your skin needs to be resurfaced or needs a deeper service for sun damage and melasma, laser treatments may be the best way to swipe the slate clean.
